Walmart has agreed to reimburse customers who overcharge for certain items. If you purchased “Weighted Goods” or “Bagged Citrus” at Walmart between October 19, 2018 and January 19, 2024, you may be eligible to submit a claim to share the product. Walmart’s recent $45 million settlement of a class action.
“Weighted goods” refers to any items that do not typically have a consistent weight and are typically priced based on that weight. Examples of weighted products include packaged meat, poultry, pork and seafood. “Bagged citrus” refers to bags of citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit.
The lawsuit alleges that Walmart’s point-of-sale machines increased the weight of merchandise when it was marked at a “Rollback” price, which would cause the total price to be higher than the advertised discounted price.
Additionally, the lawsuit claims Walmart advertised and promoted bagged products weighing more than the actual weight of the item. Clearance products sold by weight, especially with a “reduced price” sticker, also showed a discrepancy between the advertised price per kilo and what customers were paying.
Walmart has denied any wrongdoing and, according to BNC, paid the settlement to avoid trial. Walmart did not immediately respond to CNET’s request for comment.
