Who would attend OJ Simpson’s funeral?
As you have probably already heard, and as you may still be celebrating, OJ Simpson died last week at the age of 76.
The former football player, who almost permanently murdered his wife and a man named Ron Goldman in 1994, was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year.
According to various sources, Simpson deteriorated quite quickly afterward and was surrounded by his five children when he died.
Usually, after a famous person passes away, family, friends, and fans are eager to remember their life with a service of some kind. But given OJ’s infamy, many wonder whether a funeral might be appropriate.
Is a funeral planned for OJ Simpson?
OJ’s attorney, Malcolm LaVergne, provided the public with an update on the whereabouts of Simpson’s body as well as his fortune.
First, LaVergne says Simpson will cremated.
There are no plans to donate his brain to science, despite efforts in some circles to determine whether or not the retired running back suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy… a degenerative brain disease that has been studied in former football players and which is associated with behavioral and cognitive problems linked to repeated head trauma.
As for details about a memorial or funeral, his lawyer did not elaborate. We will have to assume that, if there is one, it will remain private for the family, away from prying eyes.
Maybe it’s for the best.
Simpson’s money and the debt he owes to Nicole and Goldman’s families
Elsewhere, LaVergne walked back his previous comments.
Last week, LaVergne told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that he would fight to prevent payment of the $33.5 million judgment awarded to the families of Simpson’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her son. friend Goldman.
He even said he wanted Fred Goldman, Ron’s father, to receive “zero, nothing” from Simpson’s estate…even though Simpson was convicted of Ron’s death in a civil trial.
“I can tell you in advance, Fred Goldman’s claim will be accepted. And his claim will be handled in accordance with Nevada law,” LaVergne told The Hollywood Reporter, alleging that his previous comments were not in response to Fred Goldman, but towards his lawyers.
Added Simpson’s lawyer since 2009:
“Within an hour of knowing OJ was dead, he started talking shit. My lawyer’s instinct was: “Oh, you’re going to keep shitting on him even after he’s dead?”
“Very good, you know? You get nothing. So those are my comments at this time. But I backtracked and those were pretty harsh remarks. And now I’m going the other way.
LaVergne now says he plans to invite Goldman’s mother and the person who controls Brown’s estate to a meeting in his office in order to be transparent about the process.
“We can resolve this issue in a calm and impartial manner,” LaVergne says.
We will see that, of course.
Currently executor of Simpson’s estate, LaVergne also says there are tentative plans for a “celebration of life” gathering for OJ, limited to close friends and family.
We’re not sure who else would attend such an event, since we all had the same reaction upon hearing of Simpson’s death, right?
As Caitlyn Jenner noted, GOOD RIDDANCE.
