The other day I was talking on the phone with Gaby Grossmanneditorial director of New York Magazine, and I mentioned that I had just started watching The Bear.
Surprised, she asked me why I hadn’t watched it sooner: after all, it was a cultural phenomenon with long-term knock-on effects, and a third season comes out in June. My reasoning ? Our divorce procedure The last year was so stressful that my brain always felt like a scribble. The last thing I wanted at the end of a long day was a show about people having long days. In 2023, I could only tolerate the lightest television.
“Oh, yeah, my mom’s favorite genre is what she calls ‘Bunny Rabbit shows,’” Gaby says with a laugh. “Fran Grossman is an anxious woman, and when the world is intense, she seeks to relax.”
What is considered a Bunny Rabbit sighting? Nothing suspense or violence; opt for a pick-me-up instead. “She’s a huge Property Brothers fan,” says Gaby. “She loves Gilmore Girls, Fixer Upper and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Girls5eva would definitely qualify, Parks and Recreation, anything from the Pixar universe, Nancy Meyers and Nora Ephron, but not the heartburn! It’s not more serious!
How good is Fran’s mandate? I mean, who among us hasn’t come back from a horror movie and needed a Seinfeld palate cleanser before bed? I say this to Gaby, who replies: “Yes! Like, after Requiem for a dreamgive me ten ccs of a Bunny Rabbit movie, STAT.
In case any directors are reading, Fran even had her own idea for a Bunny Rabbit movie: “The movie she introduced my brother and me to several times is called ‘Rabbits Go to the Beach’.” explains Gaby. “In the movie, real rabbits go to the beach, and the big drama is that a big wave is coming, but the rabbits are just a little wet.”
Laughing on the phone, I thank Gaby for sharing her mother’s approach. “Glad to help,” she said. “The Gospel of Bunny Rabbit is all we want to spread in these times. »
