If you purchased weighted groceries at Walmart between October 19, 2018 and January 19, 2024, you may be eligible to submit a claim for a piece of Walmart’s recent $45 million settlement.
The class targeted by the settlement consists of customers who purchased “weighted merchandise” and/or “bagged citrus” at Walmart within the past six years. “Weighted goods” refers to any items that do not typically have a consistent weight and are typically priced based on that weight. Examples of weighted products include packaged meat, poultry, pork and seafood. “Bagged citrus” refers to bags of citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit.
The lawsuit alleges that Walmart’s point-of-sale (POS) machines increased the weight of merchandise when it was marked at a “Rollback” price, which would cause the total price to be higher than the advertised discounted price.
Additionally, the lawsuit claims Walmart advertised and promoted bagged products weighing more than the actual weight of the item. Clearance products sold by weight, especially with a “reduced price” sticker, also showed a discrepancy between the advertised price per kilo and what customers were paying.
Walmart has denied any wrongdoing and, according to BNC, paid the settlement to avoid trial. Walmart did not immediately respond to CNET’s request for comment.
