Officials at the UK’s Department of Science, Innovation and Technology have begun drafting legislation to regulate AI models, Bloomberg reports. It’s unclear how future regulation will intersect with the U.K.’s already existing AI Safety Institute, which already conducts safety testing of the most powerful AI models.
However, the UK does not officially have a policy preventing companies from releasing AI models that have not been assessed for safety. It also does not have the power to remove an existing model from the market if it violates safety standards, nor to fine a company for these violations. (In comparison, the European Union’s AI law can impose fines on AI companies violate certain security criteria.)
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has already said there is no need to “rush to regulate“AI models and platforms. In the meantime, Bloomberg According to some reports, other government officials have raised the possibility of changing UK copyright rules to strengthen the opt-out option for training datasets. Any potential bill is still a ways off, according to Bloomberg.
