Brie Larson managed to squeeze in a last-minute press effort to release its new Marvel movie — this after the SAG-AFTRA strike ended — but even that couldn’t save ticket sales.
The actress — who plays the title role in “The Marvels” — got the green light from Kevin Feige and co. to walk the red carpet for the debut of their latest superhero film…not to mention a TV spot on ‘The Tonight Show’ with Jimmy Fallon, which brought him in at the eleventh hour.
Her late night appearance went as well as you could imagine…she talked about the movie, the director, the studio – everything you could want to mention before a movie comes out. Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to have stimulated interest in his project.
According to box office estimates, “The Marvels” is poised for a terrible domestic opening — by Marvel standards — with experts saying it’s on track to gross between $47 million and $52 million.
Between Thursday’s previews and Friday’s full slate of screenings, the film only took in $21.5 million…marking Marvel’s second-lowest opening day behind the original “Hulk” ” released in 2008, even before Disney bought the film. PI.
The reason it’s particularly lousy is the fact that the first “Marvel” movie starring Brie – mind you, it’s a sequel – actually cleaned up among viewers… bringing in more billion dollars worldwide upon its release. in 2019. Today, 4 years later – it’s no longer the same interest.
The question…was it the content, or the lack of marketing of the torpedoed ‘Les Merveilles’ here? He hasn’t really had a chance to make much noise due to the actors’ strike that was only a few days ago – so it’s possible that people just aren’t aware of it.
Of course, the other possibility is that there’s superhero movie fatigue – and Marvel movies simply aren’t the cash cow they used to be. If so, this could be a sign of a problem. 👀
