My favorite camera is the Polaroid SX-70. I actually own a brown leather version and it resides on my bookshelf at home. It’s a cult classic instant camera introduced in 1972, and 50 years later it looks set to become a charming Lego set. I just can’t wait to get my hands on it!
I recently shared my thoughts on the Lego Retro Camera 3-in-1 creative set inspired by the SLR camera, available from the official Lego website for $20/£17.99 and listed with a date sales start on January 1, 2024. Now, according to all the major Lego fan sites, there is also a Lego Polaroid SX-70 One Step (set #21345) on the horizon, with a launch date as well scheduled for New Year’s Day.
I’m a huge camera and Lego fan and, like buses, I’ve been waiting ages for a camera-themed set to appear, only for two to arrive at the same time. However, I’m not complaining: January 1, 2024 should be a special day!
The Retro Camera set is rumored to be a 261-piece release, recommended for ages eight and up. According to fansite Bricks Up, the Lego Polaroid SX-70 One Step will cost $79.99 (around £63), contain around twice as many pieces and be recommended for adults only, with an age range of 18 and more – not that the bill is going to put off my kids.
Like the Retro Camera set, the Polaroid SX-70 version contains many charming features that make SX70 fans like me smile, including a viewfinder, shutter release, and “working” film cassette door.
In addition to the camera, you also get a buildable film pack, as well as some instant prints, and it looks like the film can be positioned in the camera as if it had just been ejected after shooting of a photo. Neat.
Many design touches, like the rainbow stripe down the middle of the camera, are made from real Lego bricks, while other flourishes like the camera name and images on the Instant prints are definitely stickers.
Earlier this year, Lego released a Walt Disney Tribute Camera (set #43240) as part of the entertainment giant’s 100th anniversary, and it’s available to purchase now (see link below). However, the SX-70 is a more well-known instant camera – a cult classic – and I expect it to sell even better. In any case, it’s on my wishlist. It’s one of those Lego sets that, once built, stays that way, and I’m saving it a place on this shelf alongside my real SX-70!
