In the latest high-profile game hack, it appears that Spiderman 2 and current Wolverine developer Insomniac Games have been hacked by a group called Rysida, who posted screenshots of Wolverine, as well as the pages of identity of staff passports, past and current, suggesting the stolen data came from multiple departments.
Rysida said Insomniac had seven days to accept a ransom or they would release the data, but, somewhat confusingly, they also appear to be auctioning off the heist to the highest bidder online.
A post from the group reads: “With only 7 days left, take the opportunity to bid on exclusive, unique and awesome data,” Rhysida said in her leaked post online.
“Open your wallets and be ready to purchase proprietary data. We only sell one hand, no resale, you will be the sole owner!
Do I hear 50 Bitcoins in the room?
The starting offer is a rather ambitious 50 Bitcoins, which represents around $2 million.
Insomniac Games is a studio from Sony and the makers of PlayStation told Eurogamer, “We are aware of reports that Insomniac Games may have been the victim of a cybersecurity attack. We are currently investigating this situation. We have no reason to believe that other divisions of SIE or Sony were affected. »
Rysida, named after a species of caterpillar, is believed to be a Russian group and is responsible for the recent ransomware attack on the British Library last month.
According to the same Guardian article, US government agencies issued an advisory note on Rhysida, saying the “emerging ransomware variant” had been deployed against the education, manufacturing, IT and of the government since May.
The government also said it saw the Rhysida gang running a ‘ransomware as a service’ (Raas) operation – this is a scheme in which the group would rent out its tools and share the profits with other criminal enterprises involved .
It’s not yet clear what will happen next, but we’ll keep this story updated with any developments.
