Sonic mania launched on console and PC in 2017 and, in 2018, was updated to Sonic Mania Plus. The Plus upgrade added two new playable characters – Mighty and Ray – a new tutorial area, and expanded color-swapping levels.
But the biggest addition was a new game mode called Encore mode. In this new mode, instead of Sonic and his friends accumulating lives that are spent every time they find themselves on the wrong side of the drowning timer music, you accumulate party members in the style of Kong exchanging barrels in Donkey Kong Country. Throughout each level there are boxes that you break, thereby adding a new character to your party. You can switch characters at any time to take advantage of their unique powers (Knuckles’ wall climbing or Tails’ flying ability, for example), and if you die, one of your party members takes over until when there is no one left and you “Game over.” It really is, Really a fucking cool addition that I’m actually really excited to play for myself for the first time on Netflix, of all places.
With this little Sonic fangirls aside, Netflix’s announcement featured a few additional titles, including Cozy Grove: camp life, Following THE Animal crossing-like a life simulation Cozy grove, Game development moguland fashion dress up game Fashion verse — all this, with Sonic Mania Plus, will launching next year.
