Just when I was ready to declare that there is nothing to believe on this planet, I feel even more comfortable making that declaration now that Tiger Woods will no longer wear that red Nike jersey on Sundays .
Woods announced Monday on Xwitter that the 27-year relationship between him and the Oregon company had ended. He expressed gratitude for his years as a star Nike athlete and informed the world that he was starting “a new chapter.”
Whatever his next adventure is, I suspect it will serve him better than Nike is currently able to, but I’m still going to take a moment to indulge in a little melancholy as a larger part of my youth fades into the abyss.
As popular as Michael Jordan is, I never really associated him with the Nike swoosh. The Jumpman logo has been his personal brand since the late 1980s. Old advertisements ended with a VO signature “Air Jordan, from Nike.” LeBron James has a lifetime contract with Nike, but he too is his own empire.
Woods and that swoosh fit like his hand in one of his golf gloves. He’s worn a custom Nike logo on his hat in recent years, but he won this award. last Masters Championship in 2019 by putting on the swoosh on the black hat and the red shirt. His affiliation with Nike is like the chaos guy with Allstate and old “Like a rock” song with Chevrolet.
I never thought there would be a day when Woods would swing a golf club with anything other than a swoosh on his chest. He ended his statement with “see you soon in Los Angeles.” This means that in early February, the Genesis Invitational Woods will unveil a new look.
Breakups are part of life. Gerri and Roman’s grating but endearing relationship ended on Succession. Cardi B and Offset are facing issues again and, of course, one of the most unfortunate breakups of all time is the romance between Jordan and Charles Barkley.
The public shouldn’t have a vested interest in people’s private relationships, but who doesn’t seek love, or at least consistency? Some people and things feel like they’re meant to be together. This is why the authors of Abbott Elementary School will not just deliver a romance between Gregory and Janine. It feels perfect and viewers have to work a little harder for that feeling to be rewarded.
They should be together forever, just like Nike and Tiger Woods. From the audience’s perspective, the two looked great together. They made each other better and looked great as a couple on a Christmas card.
After nearly 30 years of living together, they decided to take to the streets and separate. The rest of us shake our heads while looking wistfully out the window and wondering if there really is such a thing as a love for life.
