I don’t really have a sweet tooth, but when the kids ask for dessert, I want to make sure it’s a healthy version. Dark chocolate fondue is simple to make and it’s fun to dip fresh fruit and even homemade marshmallows in it. Because it’s quick to prepare, we can have a delicious treat in about 10 minutes!
What is fondue?
Fondue comes from the French word fondre, which means to melt. Traditionally, it is prepared with a variety of melted cheeses to make a cheese fondue. More recently, the recipe has been adapted to use melted chocolate for a delicious dessert. It’s often made with milk chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate chips, or even white chocolate and is thinned with heavy cream.

This version has less sugar and optional dairy because it uses dark chocolate and coconut oil. And you can add a little peanut butter or peppermint extract in place of the vanilla, if you prefer.
How to make chocolate fondue
First of all, you want to start with quality chocolate to make your chocolate fondue. High-quality chocolate bars taste much better than cheap products and are often healthier. The best chocolate will be something with at least 72% cocoa and organic. If you can’t find dark chocolate, you can mix bittersweet chocolate with a sweeter chocolate.
It’s also important to heat the chocolate slowly, otherwise it will start to seize and burn. If you have an electric fondue pot that works great, but it can be difficult to find a non-toxic one. Some of them are made of stainless steel, but they still have a non-stick coating inside.
I transferred the hot chocolate fondue to my small slow cooker and kept it warm for dipping. You can also use a serving bowl and reheat as needed.
Chocolate Fondue Dips
My favorite options for dipping in chocolate fondue are fresh fruit, dried fruit, and homemade marshmallows. Typically, you’ll find that people also enjoy dipping things like graham crackers, pretzels, rice krispie treats, Oreos, pound cakes, and even chips! Our family doesn’t really eat this stuff, but there are still plenty of delicious and healthy fondue dips out there.
You can even drizzle a little chocolate fondue on top. on a cheesecakeice, Angel Cake, biscotti, and brownies (all healthier versions of course!).
Chocolate fondue is ideal for New Year’s Eve (even if you’re staying home for a movie night!). It’s also a decadent treat for Valentine’s Day or a date night at home. It’s very simple to make and children especially love dipping things in it!
