Since the Covid pandemic sparked a nationwide crime wave, carjackings and car thefts tormented many cities across the country.
Most of the time, these are tragic stories that don’t end well. But when a man tried to carjack a 65-year-old woman at a grocery store, he was confronted by a brave 15-year-old hero.
“It’s just the right thing to do.”
What kind of high school student would step in and stop a carjacking in this day and age? Meet Andrew Papp, the hero of our story.
Tampa Bay Fox 13 reports:
Andrew Papp, 15, is a hero, but the Riverview High School sophomore barely talked about it at school.
His director, Brian Spiro, told Andrew’s Junior ROTC class how he saved a woman while others stood and watched.
“Andrew saw this as an opportunity to step in and protect her, and he did so decisively,” Spiro said.
Andrew didn’t stop for a moment as he rushed into a supermarket parking lot to save the woman from a violent car thief.
“He told me to give him my keys, and I said no and turned away from him, and he was still on me,” Billie Richert, 65, told FOX 13 News shortly after the attack.
So we know what kind of kid Andrew is – but why did he do this?
This is an even better answer, one that is conspicuously absent from much of American life these days.
“It’s just the right thing to do,” he said. “I mean, it could be someone’s mother, someone’s aunt. Like it was my mom and someone did this to my mom and they got away, it’s like it’s terrible.
“Your mom raised a good boy.”
Richert was able to thank Andrew later through a FaceTime exchange.
Richert told him: “I want to thank you for helping me when I needed it. Your mom raised a good boy.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you,” Richert’s granddaughters repeated.
The suspect was Robert Moore, 42, charged with robbery and battery on a victim over 65 years old.
